My favourite locations in North London for fun (and great pictures) with Kids
Royal Air Force MUSEUM
Planes. Planes everywhere.
The museum is excellent for planes and vehicles obsessed kids. Although the Royal Air Force was created during wartime, for my 3-year-old son, this museum is simply the "plane museum". We've spent hours staring at different aircraft: the shark plane, the kangaroo plane, the boat plane, and others I forgot. The exhibitions are great and there is a good number of equipment for kids to stay busy indoors.
Outdoors, children can jump off a yellow helicopter, climb on planes and (pretend to) drive vehicles in an amazing playground. The playground has become my excuse to visit: I can have a nice coffee sitting outside, while my son plays with other kids.
Alexandra Palace, Muswell Hill
Ally Pally is a great place to entertain young and older children.
There are lots of hungry and crazy birds to feed around the boating lake, where you can hire pedal boats. Watch out the trees if you go for a Dragon!
For toddlers, there a good size playground with 2 sandpits and a giant slide (at least for a toddler) and also a soft play with dinosaurs a bit further.
For older children, a skate park and Go Ape (forest adventure for 6+) are nearby the lake. The ice rink is inside the palace with (scooter) penguins you can hire for beginners.
Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath
A stay and play for under 5's is held on Friday mornings. There is crafting and singing.
It is my perfect place for a lazy Sunday. We usually go to the café for a nice brunch and then chill in the garden. In spring, when the handkerchief tree and azaleas are blooming, it’s crazy beautiful.
Kenwood house makes a great starting point for a nice walk throughout Hampstead Heath. It is just a 30 min walk to Parliament Hill Paddling Pool if you want to make a splash in summer.
Parliament Hill Playground and Paddling Pool
I've never fancied a dive in Hampstead ponds, but I love to dip my toes in this pool in summer. Yes, it's crowded. Even more on sunny days. But this makes for awesome pictures. I can compose my images with layering, plays with shadows and water... Oh, and the kids have great fun too.
There is a bit of grass behind the pool area, great for a picnic, but walk at the top of the hill and enjoy the view.
The zoo used to be my go-to place when my son was younger. With friends, with dad, us two. We will frequently go only for one hour. My boy will run to the aquarium, saying hello to the colourful fish and strange turtles. I personally prefer the colourful lion area - the perfect background for family photographs.
Even when you think you've seen everything, there is more to be discovered. We met with dinosaurs during a temporary exhibit.
My youngest just turned one, so I am planning to get a membership pretty soon so he too can discover animals and insects.
I photograph families in London including Hampstead, Belsize Park, Golders Green, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Highgate, Archway, Camden, Swiss Cottage, Kensal Town. Contact me to schedule your next family photo shoot.
